Can you believe there are just four short weeks of school left? Time is passing very quickly, but there is still a lot of learning left to do!
Please continue to help your student with printing and reading skills. Some children are still hesitant when reading the 100 anchor words I sent home last week. Practicing these words nightly will give every student an advantage in reading! This would also make excellent summer work!
BOOK REPORTS were due last Wednesday. If I did not receive one from your child, I have included an additional copy of the instructions in their homework packet.
Our field trip with second grade is scheduled for this Wednesday, May 24th. Thank you to the drivers who agreed to help us! We will be departing HCS about 9am and return to school around 2pm. Students will be eating a snack before entering the zoo and eating lunch at the lunch area. There is no Choice Lunch that day for our students. Please make sure to pack a sack lunch. We will NOT be visiting or purchasing anything from the gift shop at the zoo as there is so much to see and do during our short time there. Uniforms are required; car seats, too! It’s going to be a great day!
In this week’s homework packet, I have included a permission slip for Swan Lake. (Field trip 6/2) The entire HCS school will be attending. We are so fortunate to have the opportunity to see the first act of this beautiful ballet! I have tickets for three chaperones. We, of course, need several drivers as well. If you are able to help, please email me ASAP so that we can secure your ticket! We will be leaving school at approximately 9am and returning about noon. Upon our return, the HCS community will be walking to the adjacent park for a school-wide picnic!
Our first grade week looks as follows:
Monday– Homework folders went home today with all graded work. Please take a moment to review all its contents. Homework due THURSDAY. Computers and Spanish class.
Tuesday- Mass. No shorts, please. All are invited! Religion chapter 17 test.
Wednesday– FIELD TRIP to zoo. Please send a sack lunch.
Thursday–Spelling test. 2 pm Dismissal. Art Trek.
Friday–No School! Have a great holiday weekend!
First Grade is learning…
Religion: We are finishing chapter 17 and then will begin learning about the feast of Pentecost. We will begin chapter 18 next week.
Math: We are working on adding larger numbers with regrouping with sums to 100! It has been fun and some students are ready to add beyond that! There will be a test next week.
Language Arts: Little House on the Prairie
As a read-aloud to the class, I have been reading “Little House in the Big Woods” by Laura Ingalls Wilder. This book ties in with our Social Studies unit of past and present and the children are loving it! They have been enjoying hearing about the ways in which our lives are so different from that of the children in the story. Because we have shortened weeks with field trips for the next two weeks, we will be reading an abridged chapter book called “School Days” by Laura Ingalls Wilder during our Language Arts time. Our spelling words will focus on sight words from the list of the 100 core words that I sent home last week.
Spelling words: who, what, where, when, was, have, does, said, from, because. Challenge words: zoo, animal, mammal
Story: An abridged version of “School Days”, by Laura Ingalls Wilder
Comprehension Skill: Story Details
Writing: Writing sentences with details
Social Studies: Unit 4: Past and Present. We will be comparing and contrasting the lives of Americans from the past versus today. We will also be discussing the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag tribe and Thanksgiving.
Bi-Weekly Assessments are given every other week and will act as our sight word tests. Our sight words will be on the Bi-Weekly assessment so please make sure to practice those nightly. Reading the spelling words will also help your child do well on the assessment. Click on the following link to see past sight and spelling words: Past Sight and spelling words.pdf
