I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! In my short tenure here, I have noticed that many of our students are struggling with proper letter formation in their printing. Many are even forgetting to place spaces between their words when writing sentences. Please continue to help your student with these vital skills. Looking towards the future, cursive writing is around the corner and will be very difficult if the children are not printing their letters correctly now. I have attached a form detailing the strokes that should be made as the first-graders are forming their letters. I have also attached a sample of the spelling words printed correctly on lined paper. You may use this paper to practice the words or just use it as a reference, if you prefer. Please pay attention to the placement of the letters on the lines and become familiar with these printing techniques and help instill them in your children. Practice makes perfect!
Also included with this week’s work are the book report requirements for May. The report will be due Wednesday, May 17th. It is never too early to get started on this fun project!
Our field trip with second grade is scheduled for Wednesday, May 24th. We will be going to the Santa Barbara Zoo. If you have not yet turned in your permission slips, please do do immediately so that we can ensure your child will have the opportunity to join us! (Don’t forget to send in those car seats on that day). We are in need of parent drivers! If you are interested in helping out, please email me (at Mrs. Kemp’s email address) as soon as possible! Thank you!
May Crowning is scheduled for this Friday, May 12th. What a beautiful way to celebrate and honor our Mother, Mary. The festivities begin at 10:00am and all are welcome!
Happy Mother’s Day to all this Sunday! May God continue to bless us with our many gifts and may we have a beautiful and relaxing day with our loved ones!

First Grade is learning…
Religion: We will be learning about our Mother, Mary, and how to make prayers of petition to the Holy Spirit. No Religion test this week.
Math: We are completing our unit on money and will have a test on Wednesday.
Many children continue to struggle with the counting of various coins and we will continue to work on it in the classroom, but we must move on to our next Math concept which is addition to sums of 100.
More money practice at home would be a great way to continue to solidify that difficult concept. Some games I suggested last week are still valuable and fun! (A great game at home is to have your child practice counting various combinations of coins. For example, take a small handful of coins and have your child count how much money is there. Another activity would be for you to call out an amount of money and see if your student can replicate it using the coins you have. Practice makes perfect!)
