Language Arts: Little House on the Prairie (week 3)
As a read-aloud to the class, I have been reading “Little House in the Big Woods” by Laura Ingalls Wilder. This book ties in with our Social Studies unit of past and present and the children are loving it! They have enjoyed hearing about the ways in which our lives are so different from that of the children in the story. Because we have shortened weeks with days off and field trips, we will continue to read an abridged chapter book called “School Days” by Laura Ingalls Wilder during our Language Arts time. Our spelling words will again focus on sight words from the list of the 100 core words previously sent home. Let me know if you would like an additional copy. We will also be watching an episode of “Little House on the Prairie” which was a television series in the 70’s. The episode ties into the School Days book we have been reading together.
Spelling words: to, too, two, were, are, always, for, four, know, about *summer, vacation, beach
Story: An abridged version of “School Days”, by Laura Ingalls Wilder
Comprehension Skill: Story Details
Writing: Long and short vowel sounds, contractions
Social Studies: Unit 4: Past and Present. We will be comparing and contrasting ways of communication and travel from long ago to today. Test Wednesday.
This week will begin our end of year assessments. Each student will complete a series of reading comprehension and writing exercises to measure their progress towards first grade content standards.
FOR THE LAST WEEK OF SCHOOL:
I have some great ideas for FUN learning for the last week of school with each day representing a different theme! The themes include: camping, the beach, friendship, sports and memories. Each theme requires a few supplies that I am happy to provide, HOWEVER, IF you’d like to help, you will be receiving a sign-up genius email from me with a link to the needed supplies. Again, there is no obligation! All listed items on the sign-up genius can be brought in any time prior to Monday, June 12th (other than two fresh fruit items that I would prefer that morning, listed on the signup sheet). For that last week, there will be no need to pack an afternoon snack. Each theme includes a snack, hence some of the requested items! Thank you in advance for your help!
Important Upcoming Dates/Items Needed:
June 8th – Free dress $1, jeans $2
June 9th – 8th Grade Graduation Mass 1pm
June 12th-16th – Free dress all week
